Equine Dental Equilibration

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Equine Dental Equilibration Program uses a comprehensive approach designed to teach students the skills and give them the knowledge necessary to provide proper floating and balancing of the equine mouth.  Students of this program will be able to identify and correct malocclusion and other abnormalities by applying proper technique using both hand and power instruments.  They will be able to age the equine by dentition, and will learn how to give practical advice on the extraction of wolf teeth and premolar caps. Students will learn the structure, function and various parts of the equine head and neck. Students completing this program may pursue a proprietary career as an equine dental equilibrator or seek employment as an assistant to a veterinarian.

Age and education requirements

Students must be a minimum of at least 18 years of age at the time of signing enrollment agreement.

Student must provide proof of ONE of the following:

  • Secondary education (GED or high school diploma);

         OR

  • Successful completion or the equivalent of one full-time (12 academic semester hours) or academic quarter (18 academic quarter hours) at an accredited college, university, or other postsecondary school.

PROGRAM Outline

This program is designed to be completed within eighteen months of the beginning date or sooner, and is broken down into three separate courses, DT101, DT102, DT103.  Each student is required to complete all three courses and a Head & Neck Anatomy course for a total amount of 280 hours to complete the program.  If a student is unable to complete the program within the eighteen month time frame, a written request for an extension must be submitted to our director for approval or the student will be terminated. The student must then re-enroll into the program within three days in order to be eligible to receive prior credit for previous hours completed.

Students who drop out for non-academic reasons (family emergencies, medical  emergencies, financial, etc.) will have six months to re-enroll in order to receive prior credit for previous hours completed. Failure to

re-enroll within the six-month period may disqualify the student to receive prior credit for previous hours completed.

(DT 101) ................. 90 Hours (46 theory, 44 lab)

(DT 102) ................. 90 Hours (46 theory, 44 lab)

Students are offered an option to take one additional week of wet lab in preparation for the practical test in DT 103.  See Optional Classes for more details.

NOTE:  At the end of each course, students will be given a certificate indicating satisfactory attendance of required hours toward completion of the program.  Each student will receive a Certificate of Completion of the program after attending all three courses and passing the final exam.  A Certificate of Completion is intended to show the student's satisfactory completion of the program at Texas Institute of Equine Dentistry, and is not intended for state licensing or certification.
