DT103
Course Description
The Equine Dental Equilibration-Graduate Level – DT103 Course uses a more aggressive approach designed to re-enforce the basic and mid level skills and give a more profound knowledge with regard to providing proper floating and balancing of the equine mouth. Students completing this course will possess the ability to identify and correct malocclusion and other abnormalities by applying proper technique using both hand and power instruments as well as provide practical advice on the extraction of wolf teeth and premolar caps. Students completing this course may pursue a proprietary career as an equine Graduate Level Dental Equilibrator or seek employment as an assistant to a veterinarian.
Format
This course will include lectures, outside reading, wetlabs, discussions, and guest speakers. Most assignments will be completed individually but there will be opportunities for group work.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of DT101 and DT102 or approved transfer credit

Practical Exam
Grades
Students attempting to pass DT103 will have to pass a final written exam with a 70% or better and a practical exam (over 6 horses) averaging at least an 85% overall. Students have to pass BOTH the written and practical exams to successfully complete DT103.
Course Graduation Requirements
As well as passing both exams, students must also turn in 100 charts of work completed from the start of the program, including at least 25 charts of documented case histories of incisor realignment. Students will not successfully complete DT103 without turning in their charts.
Objectives
· Identify and describe the structure and function of the equine mouth
· Age the equine by dentition
· Float buccal and lingual cusps
· Provide practical advice regarding wolf teeth and cap extraction
· Identify incisor problems and requirement for incisor realignment
· Recognize ramps, ETR, anterior/posterior locking problems, hooks, protuberant teeth, waves, decay, periodontal problems
· Understand occlusion/excursion dimensions
· Demonstrate ability to create proper bitseats
· Provide practical advice regarding extractions of molars in aged horses (20 years and older)
· Demonstrate correct use of modern power equipment
Cost
$200; $300 to retest if a student fails the practical the first time
